On Friday, January 27, 2012, at 7:42am the Dickinson County Communications Center received a report of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 9 approximately one-quarter mile east of 170th Avenue, between Spirit Lake and Lake Park.
An investigation by the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office found that a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Glenda Reinke from Spirit Lake was eastbound on Highway 9 and fell asleep just east of 170th Avenue, crossing the centerline. A westbound 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Patrick Parrott from Spirit Lake observed the Reinke vehicle cross the centerline and attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision. At that point, Reinke awoke and attempted to veer back into her lane. The two vehicles then collided, sending the Parrott vehicle into the south ditch. Reinke's vehicle came to rest in the eastbound lanes of the highway.
Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and both were transported by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare; Reinke with non-incapacatating injuries, Parrott with incapacating injuries.
Approximately $15,000 in damage was done to the Reinke Grand Prix and $20,000 to the Parrott Grand Prix.
The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by:
- Iowa State Patrol
- Spirit Lake Police Department
- Lake Park Fire Department
- Lake Park Rescue
- Milford Fire Department
- Lakes Regional Hospital Ambulance
The accident remains under investigation.
