Weapons Permits

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office manages the issuance of weapons permits. The Sheriff’s Office issues plastic ID cards for individuals issued Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons and paper cards for individuals who only receive an Annual Permit to Acquire.

Permit to Carry

The State of Iowa application form must be submitted to the Dickinson County Sheriff. The form is available below. The submitted application must include the acceptable training documentation required by the State of Iowa.

You must apply in person at the Sheriff’s Office located at the Dickinson County Courthouse, 1802 Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake.. Permits can be obtained Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A new permit to carry requires a fee of $50.00 cash for a paper copy, $10.00 extra for a hard plastic card and a valid driver’s license or non-operator ID that contains your photograph and current Dickinson County address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The permits are valid for five years from the issue date.

Renewal application must be received by the Sheriff’s Office no later than thirty days prior to expiration date. Failure to do so may leave the permit holder without a valid permit and will require a new application.

Annual Permit to Acquire Weapons

The State of Iowa application form must be submitted to the Dickinson County Sheriff. The form is available below. You must apply in person at the Sheriff‘s Office at the Dickinson County Courthouse, 1802 Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake.

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $10.00 cash and a valid driver’s license or non-operator ID that contains your photograph and current Dickinson County address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A permit to acquire is valid for five years from the date of issue.
