Lieutenant Petersen joined the Sheriff's Office in June of 2001 following four years with the Milford Police Department and two years with the Lake Park Police Department. Lieutenant Petersen graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 1996 after attending Iowa Lakes Community College's Criminal Justice Program.Lieutenant Petersen is a certified ILEA firearms instructor, rifle instructor, low light instructor, and a certified rifle sharpshooter.

In October of 2006, Deputy Petersen was promoted to the Lieutenant's position within the Sheriff's Office.
